About Livingston
GATEWAY TO YELLOWSTONE

The area that is now known as Livingston was once called Clark City, named for William Clark’s stop in the region during the Lewis and Clark expedition. Eventually, the area came to house the division headquarters for the Northern Pacific Railway, and was officially renamed in 1882 to honor Johnston Livingston, a railway executive.

The railway remained the main source of economic growth and stability in Livingston for over a century. Today however, the city is better known for its ranching and agriculture, as well as its thriving art scene.

The former railroad town is surrounded by the Crazy and Absaroka mountain ranges, and resides on the banks of the Yellowstone River in southwest Montana, making it the perfect base camp for adventurers hoping to see more of Montana’s geographical beauty.

Yellowstone National Park’s northern entrance is only one hour from Livingston, making it easy to explore the features of the park, such as Mammoth Hot Springs. This is the only entrance to the park open year-round, so family-friendly fun in the National Parks is only ever an hour’s drive away!

Livingston is also only a half hour drive from Chico Hot Springs, a resort that features two natural hot spring pools. While the hot springs were once renowned for their healing properties, Chico has now become a popular vacation resort. Visitors have the option to stay in a restored railroad car, a luxury cabin, or (for the more rustic) a Conestoga covered wagon.

If outdoor adventures aren’t your thing, Livingston is also home to great restaurants, bookstores, and local art galleries as well as boutique shops and charming Old West-style architecture. Whether you want to go out or stay close to home, Livingston has options for everyone.
